After having had flu a year ago, the shortness of breath, coughing and chest pains continued even after being treated with antibiotics. I've been smoking two packs a day for 36 years. Being born without a sternum caused my ribs to be curled in just one inch away from my spine, resulting to underdeveloped lungs. At age 34 I had surgery and it was fixed. Unfortunately my smoking just caused more damage to my already under developed lungs. The problem was having is that I enjoy smoking and don't want to give up! Have tried twice before and nearly went crazy and don't want to go through that again. I saw the fear in my husband and children's eyes when I told them about my condition then they start to find solution on their own to help my condition.I am an 57 now who was diagnose COPD emphysema which I know was from my years of smoking. I started smoking in school when smoking was socially acceptable. I remember when smoking was permitted in hospitals. It was not known then how dangerous cigarettes were for us, and it seemed everybody smoked but i was able to get rid of my COPD lung condition through the help of Dr Akhigbe total cure herbal medicine. my husband saw his testimony on the internet he used his powerful medicine to cured different diseases. we contacted his email [drrealakhigbe@gmail.com} He has the right herbal formula to help you get rid and repair any lung conditions and others diseases, will cure you totally and permanently with his natural organic herbs,We received the medicine through courier delivery service. I think that you are closer to the nub of the problem when you speak of "the Ponzi scheme called the economy." If we were to base our economy on something other than consumerism (as you put it), I suspect that the carrying capacity of the planet would be more than adequate to the population.

It's probably true that if the population were what it was in 1915 we'd be doing just fine. But a big part of the reason that the population has gone up in the last 100 years is that life has gotten better in concrete, objective ways: infant mortality is way down, people are healthier, wealthier, and better fed, and are living longer. It is less true now to say that life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" than it was in Hobbes's day, or even in 1915. So it would be better to say that we would be doing OK if the civilizational improvements since 1915 had still taken place, but somehow the population growth that they enabled hadn't happened. I find that unlikely.
Chris Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03220498656377282715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150292420798357067.post-6325575973124231842020-02-01T16:21:03.011-05:002020-02-01T16:21:03.011-05:00You asked, "do you think that in their Histor...You asked, "do you think that in their History classes, Southern kids are being taught any more than the standard “dates, places, and battles” that the rest of us are?" I don't know the answer to this, but I would like to point out that at least in principle, the answer is knowable. Many if not all states have educational systems, applicable at least to their public schools, in which a state Board of Education[sic] prescribes what is to be taught at various grade levels. How rigorous this prescription is, i.e., how tightly it must be followed (and correspondingly, how much latitude a teacher has in following it), probably varies from state to state, but it's there. (Note that the very influential board in Texas has publicly made complete asses of themselves with some of what they pack into that prescription, and has been called on it, in venues that you and I both follow among others.)

I have neither the expertise nor the resources to cross-check what's prescribed in Alabama or Mississippi versus what's prescribed in Minnesota or Oregon (note that I am carefully omitting Texas and California here) that might be relevant to the flag issue, but it might be an interesting thread to pull. I'll write a "guest column" on Alzheimer's and when to stop accommodating a victim's social needs, as we discussed on Facebook, as soon as I figure out how to do it. What's your recommendation on that? Should I just send you raw text? Is there a markup that allows inclusion of links -- there are a couple I want to use? Where to send it? I'd rather not do it directly on Facebook, which kinda defeats the purpose of doing it here. Whatever your recommendation is, I'll try to find a way to work with it. Probably won't get to it until Thursday, as I'm at our Pagosa Springs house (gathering up stuff for our impending Yellowstone trip, we'll be leaving from NM, not here) and the computer here has rather rudimentary text-editing tools.

Thanks, and hope all is well with you.
-- Bill.Bill Johnsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150292420798357067.post-3032521346487477662019-02-26T18:16:41.001-05:002019-02-26T18:16:41.001-05:00Naw, man. The "agree to disagree" conversation is very frequently rhetoric of camp #2. I don't know which online arguments you're talking about (and sure, the larger the conversation, the more likely the stalemate); but you've gotta get that there are some positions that are correct and some positions that are indefensible and not harmless.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01061901913803704800noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150292420798357067.post-48134852075820889712019-01-22T10:45:26.152-05:002019-01-22T10:45:26.152-05:00Very nice! When my eldest was maybe 15, he proposed that it was unfair that when we had a disagreement that we didn't decide in his favor at least half the time. So I did the math with him. 80% of the time, what you want to do is fine with us, and you get to do it, no problem. 10% of the time, what you want to do is not ok with us at first, but you make a convincing argument, and you get to do it. 5% of the time, what you want to do is not ok with us, but you don't care that much, and you just accept our refusal. That leaves the 5% of the time when you want to do something, it's not ok with us, and you've already pulled out your best argument for it, but we have not been convinced. In general, these are situations in which saying "yes" feels to us as if it would be an abdication of our sacred duty as parents to keep you safe, to require moral uprightness, or some other foundational thing. 100% of the time I will refuse to abdicate what I believe is my sacred duty. You will lose 100% of these, because there just isn't any way I can sleep at night if I let these go. So you'll just have to make do with getting to do 90% of what you want to do, until you are an adult and 100% responsible for yourself.Valeriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16063971875297623208noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150292420798357067.post-11838645089569107962018-07-21T22:30:50.814-04:002018-07-21T22:30:50.814-04:00Hey! I've noticed since I became a follower of Christ that music has followed some trends and yet there often appears to be a central core that remains relatively unchanged (certainly in the last 20 years) . It believe worship is sometimes written to make it easier for the church members to be able to sing without struggling with difficult shifting motifs and syncopated lead melodies.

I am a performing DJ and have been since before I went to University (gotta pay your way somehow). I adore electronic music, specifically deep and soulful 'House'. Additionally I do like many other forms of music both contemporary and classical, that being said, we at our church have recently evolved our band to integrate Cubase and Halion Sonic (a Virtual Studio Technology) along with some decent MIDI controllers/keyboards. Essentially this has greatly increased our sound palette and widened our scope of musical genres that we can perform. We've found that during a quieter section of worship we can use some really wide and ethereal sounding pads (airy, floaty sounds) to create a sonic backdrop, using a LPF (low pass filter) you can really bring a warm, space filling undertone that sits beneath an acoustic guitar or piano. Our drummer is a very canny (accomplished) fella and he uses a full size Roland kit, you can change the sound template for different styles (it has the TR-909 set amongst many others). The bass player will pick up his electric bass and yet he can switch right over to the keyboard and lay down a Moog bass-line groove.

Ultimately I believe that music is a multi accessible creation and can only have been designed to resonate with us that way. It certainly can be a very powerful vehicle for focusing the mind in prayer and I don't think most believers would have any doubt about that. I do believe that the reference to 'sung prayers' kind of fits into what I know as deep worship, whereas praise is more akin to what may be described as being 'disruptive'. I suppose in king David's era they did make a more noisy form of worship using their instruments and according to the Bible included percussion. David did also play the harp, perhaps he may have done this for more intimate, reflective moments of worship with the Lord.

Just to mention in closing we apply the new technology instruments to our once a month evening service, all are welcome and yet it is primarily presented to young adults; the more 'mature' congregation who you wouldn't normally expect to acclimatise to newer sounds seem to be gate-crashing the events in ever increasing droves. I believe it was attributed to Francis of Assisi, but that may not be accurate: "Preach the Gospel at all times; use words if necessary."

The year I completed my graduate work at Syracuse University, I had the good fortune of living with Pastor Paul Bosch and his family in the Lutheran campus parsonage. When someone came to the door and asked Paul to accept a religious tract or hear their witness, he always had the same response. Paul went to a nearby drawer and took out a copy of Luther's "Small Catechism." Then he would tell the visitor that he would accept and read the visitor's religious material if the visitor would take and read his. Paul told me that he never had any takers!Craig Ottonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150292420798357067.post-73512437592399136102018-05-29T12:45:29.136-04:002018-05-29T12:45:29.136-04:00Why should anyone listen to me?
Well, they should...Why should anyone listen to me?

Well, they shouldn't. Nor to me. Neither of us speaks for God; but the Church does. To the Church, God says "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations ..."; but to individuals, He says "in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." The Church goes into the world proactively, preaching the Gospel to every creature; but as individuals, we are to wait until we are asked, and then gently and respectively give an account for the hope that is within us.

Christians often think that it is our responsibility as individuals to "witness", so that people will come to faith in Jesus Christ. But consider what the Augsburg Confession has to say about how people come to faith:

That we may obtain this faith, the ministry of teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments was instituted. For through the Word and Sacraments, as through instruments, the Holy Ghost is given, who works faith ...
(Augsburg Confession, article V)

So if we Lutherans are right, then it is not through personal evangelism, tract-pushing, or even through reading the Bible, that people come to faith; it is through the public ministry of the Church in which the Word of God is faithfully preached and taught and people are brought into fellowship with God through His holy sacraments.

why doesn’t he just do it himself, in a voice that we’ll all know is his?

Evidently there is some value in receiving Him by grace, through faith, something that we would not have if we were to be given objective, incontrovertible knowledge. That is, I think, what our Lord was referring to when he said to St Thomas, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
Chris Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03220498656377282715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150292420798357067.post-69589821883333912722018-05-22T10:18:00.862-04:002018-05-22T10:18:00.862-04:00Well said as usual, Keith. It would be hard for me to imagine a literal angel coming to earth, looking around for a while, and NOT coming to the conclusion that millions of Americans worship this idol made of steel. (Not to stir up more trouble, but I have long had a similar view about worshiping the US flag. And let's face it, the flag is also used as a weapon -- but that's a different subject.) That angel, of course, would be condemned as un-American, and pulpits would thunder that he (sex arbitrary; "it" doesn't feel right) was actually a devil in disguise -- but he'd still report what he saw back to his boss.
Graybloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04158788561510071210noreply@blogger.com
